Explain two advantages of being a media conglomerate. (4)
One advantage is that it can attract more audiences. This is because a conglomerate will own multiple subsidiaries that have different roles and may apply to different audiences. Another advantage is by increasing revenue. This is again due to the multiple subsidiaries that a conglomerate may own - being able to gain income from each of these is beneficial to the company as a whole.
Tent-Pole
This is a major motion picture which is expected to generate major income for a studio. This can be redistributed and used to support and fund other releases. This tent-pole- supports the whole tent.
- The LEGO Movie is a production from a major, global studio which illustrates its conglomerates (Warner Bros).
Advantages
1. Higher production values as more money is being plugged into it.
2. Sequels made from the profit.
3. Other films are funded - may be able to experiment.
4. Merchandise funds as well.
The LEGO Movie is a big budget 'tent-pole' movie. Explain at least two benefits of this for Warner Brothers. (10)
One benefit is that the profit gained from the LEGO Movie can be used for a sequel. This is because the LEGO Movie was successful, and as a result benefited Warner Brothers as the profit gained could be used to make Lego Movie 2. In addition, this profit gained could be used by Warner Bros to experiment with the production of other media products, for example the LEGO Batman movie - taking the same concept of the original Lego movie, for a well known fictional character.
Another benefit is that Warner Bros could use the profit gained from the LEGO movie to release merchandise or something similar. This is because as the Lego Movie was a successful tent-pole, they were able to use the profits made for external use, but still based around the movie. This not only includes clothing, but also of course lego sets using characters and buildings, and other similar toys influenced by the LEGO movie. Therefore this was beneficial as Warner Bros could maintain relevance and expand using the profits made from the LEGO movie to fund this.
